Simple, beautiful, concise, thoughtful, and meaningful are all words to describe The First Thirty Seconds. At each turn of the page the reader is presented with a thoughtful sentence or paragraph of various subjects and then a reflection on the opposite page. All of the topics are presented to help the reader focus on positive thoughts and behaviors.
The book is presented in the style of a devotional with each double page to be read individually so that there is an opportunity to ponder and apply to the reader’s life. The topics covered are all of the things we encounter in our everyday lives and the feelings and thoughts that can hinder us if we let them. What a wonderful way to start the day by reading, contemplating, and applying the thoughts presented! Then to be able to use what you learn to make choices through the day that reflect a righteousness of character and goodness.
I would recommend this book for anyone who would like to start their day in a positive manner. The book has one of the most beautiful covers I have ever seen, and with each page decoratively framed, I would especially recommend the book as a gift.
Personal thoughts: It is easy to find things that are wrong with the local church. A former pastor removed because he was embezzling money for gambling. A pastor rewrote a 40 year old church constitution and added cult-like rules. If you did not agree and were honest, you were no longer a member. I have seen what is wrong with the church. But in spite of imperfect people, I have also seen what is right with the church.
The author of What‘s Right With the Church brings into focus those doctrines that are essential for the local church to get right. The author uses Biblical standards as he discusses Jesus, the Bible, Conversion, Sin, Worship, and other necessary principles. I especially enjoyed the chapter on Worship where the different types of worship were illustrated. He explained why diversity in worship styles is good and should be embraced. I also found his information about the “invitation” following the sermon very enlightening. The author’s message is that if the church can get it right on these subjects, they will make such a tremendous difference that the public will see and desire what Jesus and the local church has to offer.
What’s Right With the Church is a wonderful, thoughtful, and Biblically sound book. It is perfect for the church library, church leaders, and Christians in general. It is also a good book for those who want information on what to look for when seeking a church home.
From the book: Jeff Andrews didn't just scam people; he ripped them off for everything they were worth. He took their homes, cars, planes, boats, even their girlfriends, and spent the money on booze, guns, coke, and limousines.
My Review:
Jeff Andrews was a bad guy, a crook, drug addict, thief, womanizer, and all around jerk.He stole from anyone and everyone and didn’t care.He was so self-focused that he only cared about his own needs and wants. He spent time in 25 jails and correctional facilities. Desperate Highway tells the story of a young man who makes one bad decision after another until his is a full-blown habitual crook.
The book chronicles the years he spent stealing and losing whole fortunes at a time. His life of criminal behavior left him on the run and always fearing detection. He was a hopeless waste of life – until he met the one person who could change his heart and make him someone of worth. While in prison he opened a Gideon Bible, and finally heard the truth about what was important in life, and gave him the one thing he didn’t have - love.Desperate Highway clearly explains that even the worst of the worst have value in God’s eyes, and redemption is always in their reach.
This is an excellent book with an important message.I appreciated the appendixes in the back of the book with information on Jeff Andrews’ ministries.I would have liked to know more about his transition into the ministries, but that does not take away from the importance of the book and the message.Jeff’s life begins where the book ends.According to the book and his website, he is involved with prison ministries and mentoring those just out of prison.Mr. Stretch had done a nice job in capturing the important messages in this book.
I am no longer accepting books for review. Most of the books that I review on this blog I have received free of charge from the publisher, publicist, or author. In most cases it is an advanced reader copy or electronic copy. Receipt of the book is always with the understanding that I only post honest, thoughtful reviews. I receive a short description of the book from the sender, and then I try to accept only books I will like. I am not an author nor professional writer. I am just a book lover and enjoy blogging. Unless I note that I am reviewing a library, a purchased, or borrowed book, you may assume that my book has been received for review.
